How To Make Chickpea Flour At Home (Chane Pitti)

Chickpea powder is used to make ladoos for festivals like Janmastami, Ganesh Chaturthi. It was my granny's, mom's go to ingredient to make chane pitta undo, Chickpea panchakajjaya (Chanedali panchakajjaya) & Chickpea Flour Panchakajjaya (Chanedali pitti panchakajjaya).

Chickpea powder can be made easily at home.

You can powder whole chickpeas or powder chana dal. It's easier to make powder from chana dal than from chickpeas. Taste of powder from chana dal is a bit better too.

If you're using chana dal here's the way to do it. Below are steps to do it using whole chickpeas. Process remains the same. Time taken to fry the dal & whole chickpeas differs. With whole chickpeas you'll have pieces of the peel remaining after straining the powder made.

Ingredients you'll need:

  • 2 cups of chana dal
  • A dry pan to roast it
  • A super dry mixer jar
  • A super dry strainer/sieve

Method:

1. Heat up chana dal in a dry pan. Dry roast it until it starts to brown on medium heat.

2. Keep sauteing so that they all roast uniformly.

3. Once they brown a little, remove off heat, cool them down completely.

4. Powder in a mixer until they're a fine powder.

5. Strain the powder through a dry sieve.

6. Collect fine powder in a plate, small pieces of chana dal that remain you can powder them again in the mixer & repeat the process.

7. You'll have fine powder of chana dal to make chane pitta undo.

P.S: Granny & mom use tiny pieces of chana dal that remain in making panchakkajaya
