Broken Puffed Paddy Panchakajjaya/layapitta panchakkajaya is prepared as naivedya for different poojas, distributed as prasadam. Panchakajjaya in Kannada technically means mixture of 5 elements, panch meaning five. Prasad (an offering to the lord/deity) is distributed to devotees after pooja.
Occasions and festivals for which we prepare laya panchakajjayya are chudi pooja, Ganesh chaturthi, ganapathi visarjana pooja, vayna pooja etc. A variety of panchakajjayas are prepared from different pulses, mixed with 4 other elements or more to make panchakkajjaya.
At our place, were Lord Ganesha idol is brought home & worshipped during Ganesh Chathurthi, we make this in big quantities and share it with people who come to see the idol. As kids we loved making packets of this panchakajjayya and distributing it.
Usually 1 tablespoon is eaten/served as prasad. (I really love it so much that I can eat more.)
