Broken Puffed Paddy Panchakajjaya (layapitta panchakajjayya) is prepared as naivedyam for different poojas, called as prasadam. Panchakajjaya (panch meaning five) in kannada technically means mixture of 5 elements. Prasad (an offering to the lord/deity) is distributed to devotees after pooja.
Occasions and festivals for which we prepare laya panchakajjayya are chudi pooja, Ganesh chaturthi, ganapathi visarjana pooja, vayna pooja etc. A variety of panchakajjayas are prepared from different grams.
At our place, those who bring home Ganesha idol make this in big quantities and share it with people who come to see the idol. As kids we loved making packets of this panchakajjayya and distributing it.
Usually 1 tablespoon is eaten at a time/served as prasad. (I really love it so much that I can eat more.)
This layapitta panchakajjayya, without ghee is used as choornu (inner filling) for patholi.
